Ceylon Cinnamon
Ceylon Cinnamon can be mentioned as the most astonishing cinnamon plant in the world without any doubt and the highest amount of true cinnamon is provided by Sri Lanka for the world market. Cinnamon can be introduced as one of the indigenous economic crops for Sri Lanka.
About 500 years ago, a Kolombas sailor was engaged in the search for a new sea route to the east of the world and the most important spice crop he wanted is the cinnamon plant. But it was not possible because the sea route could not be found. The Portuguese managed to find the sea route to the east and the main reason they came to Sri Lanka was the cinnamon crop. After that developed into a political crisis.
Cinnamon is an evergreen perennial plant [Cinnamomum verum] that belongs to the Family Lauraceae and it belongs to the genus Cinnamomum.
The popular main two species of economical cinnamon are true cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon. Cassia is also belonging to true cinnamon genus and species. Cassia is mainly cultivated in east Asian countries Indonesia, China and Vietnam. But the quality of this cassia cinnamon is much lower than the true cinnamon.
